Where Wisdom Begins

📖 Proverbs 9:10–12 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.11 For by me your days will be multiplied, and years of life will be added to you.12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, and if you scoff, you will bear it alone.”

We often chase answers. Like, what to do next, how to fix something, how to

move forward. But Proverbs 9:10-12 redirects us: wisdom doesn’t begin with knowing everything, no, it begins with knowing God.

“The fear of the Lord” isn’t about being afraid, it’s about reverence, honor, and choosing to place God at the center. It’s a posture that says, “God, I trust Your way above my own.” And from that place, that's where wisdom flows.

Not just information. Not just quick decisions. But God-shaped discernment. The kind of discernment that guides your steps, that guards your heart, and adds depth to your life.

Verse 11 reminds us that wisdom is not empty handed. It brings life, longevity, and stability. When we walk in alignment with God, we avoid unnecessary detours, heartache, and wilderness experiences.

Then verse 12 lets us know: Wisdom is personal. No one else can walk it out for you.

You can hear truth, sit in church every Sunday, read devotions like this, but the reward comes when you choose to live it. And the opposite is also true because rejecting wisdom carries its own weight.

Let me leave you with this:

Wisdom starts with honoring God—and it shows up in how you choose to live.

Reflection Questions:

  • Have I been seeking answers more than I’ve been seeking God?

  • What does honoring God look like in my current situation?

  • Where is God inviting me to choose wisdom over convenience?

Declare Today:

“I choose wisdom by choosing God. I honor Him in my decisions, and my life reflects His truth.”

Let's Pray:

Father, teach me to honor You first. Let my life be rooted in reverence for who You are, not just a desire for quick answers. Give me wisdom that shapes my choices, guards my steps, and leads me into life and peace. Help me not just to hear truth, but to live it out daily. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
